Background of the Study:
Open access publishing has emerged as a significant mechanism for increasing research dissemination by making scholarly works freely available to a global audience. At Borno State University, lecturers are beginning to explore open access channels to overcome financial barriers and to enhance the impact of their research outputs (Usman, 2023). The move towards open access publishing is driven by the need for greater research visibility, enhanced academic collaboration, and a reduction in publication costs. Despite these promising prospects, lecturers' adoption of open access remains influenced by factors such as institutional culture, perceived quality of open access journals, and concerns about peer-review processes. The transition from traditional subscription-based journals to open access platforms necessitates a re-evaluation of academic practices and a willingness to embrace digital transformation. This study will assess how lecturers at Borno State University perceive and adopt open access publishing, examining both its advantages and the challenges that impede its wider acceptance, thereby fostering a more inclusive and forward-thinking academic environment (Abdullahi, 2024).
Statement of the Problem:
Even though open access publishing offers significant benefits, lecturers at Borno State University face challenges that limit its widespread adoption. Factors including inadequate institutional support, skepticism regarding the credibility of open access outlets, and a lack of effective training in digital publishing practices have resulted in slow adoption rates. Such challenges hinder the potential for increased research visibility and academic collaboration. The study will explore these problems and strive to identify practical solutions that can encourage lecturers to adopt open access publishing more broadly (Mohammed, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the extent of open access publishing adoption among lecturers.
To identify the challenges inhibiting wider acceptance of open access publishing.
To propose strategies to improve lecturers’ engagement with open access platforms.
Research Questions:
What is the current level of open access publishing among lecturers at Borno State University?
What challenges do lecturers face in adopting open access publishing?
What measures can increase the uptake of open access publishing practices?
Significance of the Study:
This study is significant as it highlights the benefits and challenges of open access publishing in improving research dissemination. The results will guide institutional policy reforms and training initiatives, ultimately fostering a more robust and accessible academic publishing culture (Hassan, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is confined to assessing open access publishing among lecturers at Borno State University and does not consider other academic institutions or alternative publication models.
Definitions of Terms:
Open Access Publishing: The dissemination of research outputs free of charge to readers.
Academic Publishing: The process of making research findings publicly available.
